My painting is going very well. ...I did that Dutch landscape again: the one with a row of trees coming toward you opening up because of the perspective. It's by Hobbema. In this composition there (is) the mirror painted from my Volkswagen (in scale) with my reflection in it. It has been titled "Auto-portrait" (George Deem, letter to Jean Rigg, December 21, 1971).
Autoportrait. When I was living in Italy I drove a white Volkswagen convertible. One day, driving along the Mediterranean coast and looking in the rear view mirror, I conceived this painting quoting the Dutch painter Hobbema's famous landscape. Deem is a contraction of the Dutch name De Heem. (George Deem, June 1, 1978. Note written for an exhibition of paintings by George Deem at the Merida Gallery, Louisville, Kentucky, June 12 - July 8, 1978).
