"Tete-A-Tete: Portraits in Dialogue," Allan Stone Projects, New York, February 25 - April 25, 2016. Artists included in the exhibition are: Bo Bartlett, William Beckman, Willem de Kooning, John De Andrea, George Deem, Richard Estes, Arshile Gorky, John Graham, Susan Hauptman, Elizabeth King, Franz Kline, Diana Moore, John O'Reilly, Guy Pene du Bois, Stephen Cornelius Roberts, David Alfaro Siqueiros, James Weeks, and Jack Whitten.

"(In George Deem's 'Portrait of an American Priest') the focus of the composition ... stays on the portrait subject, sitting with crossed legs and regarding us warily through eyeglasses. Deem shows us something about an individual here, as well as demonstrating solid technique.

"Director's Favorites: 1999 -2015," New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, Connecticut, October 17, 2015 - January 3, 2016.

Celebrating Director Douglas Hyland and his 16 years of distinguished achievement at the New Britain Museum of American Art.
The inaugural exhibition in our new 3,000 sq. ft. Stitzer Family Gallery will highlight some of the many works acquired during Director Douglas K.S. Hyland’s tenure at the NBMAA. Over the last 16 years, Hyland has overseen the Museum’s acquisition of over 6,000 objects, growing the collection from 4,500 to over 14,000 works that span all periods and media including paintings, sculptures, photographs, and illustrations.
Hyland’s selection of his favorite objects for this show reveals the diversity of artists, subject matter, and genre collected in the last 16 years. They also reflect acquisitions emanating from many fruitful relationships with artists and collectors cultivated by Hyland over the years. On view will be works from the collections of Frederick and Joan Baekeland, Joel Davis, the late Charles Goss, Dr. Paul Kanev, Ellen Wineberg, Ronald Vance on behalf of the George Deem Estate, the late Rita Heimann, M. Stephen and Miriam Miller, Judith O’Rourke, the late Deborah Pfeiffenberger, Lindsley Wellman and the late Judith Vance Weld Brown, Linda Cheverton Wick and Walter Wick, and Douglas and his wife Tita.

George Deem Collection. I first became aware of the paintings of George Deem (1932 - 2008) in 1978 when I read the catalog for the exhibition curated by my predecessor, William Hennessey, at the Spencer Museum, University of Kansas. Subsequently, I was pleased to become reacquainted with his work by visiting Trustee, Linda Cheverton-Wick, and Walter Wick at their downtown Hartford studio. In 2006, the Museum organized a retrospective of the works of George Deem shortly before work was commenced on the Chase Family Building. We were saddened by George Deem's untimely death in 2008. As the years passed, I was in regular contact with George's partner, Ronald Vance, who coincidentally was born and raised in New Britain, Connecticut.

Deem had sold during his lifetime many of his paintings to museums and private collectors across the country, but, fortunately, a number of his best canvases remained in Ronald's possession and in 2013 he decided to donate 153 works by Deem to the permanent collection of the Museum along with many supporting papers, books, and other documents that now form the George Deem archives. After consulting with Ronald, it was his decision to offer other paintings and watercolors to museums across the country so that they would have an opportunity to be displayed for the benefit of a wider audience. Our intent is to rotate works by Deem on a regular basis so that we will always have selected works by this leading American figurative artist hanging. George Deem, The Immaculate Conception, 1971. Catalogue description: The wittiness of George Deem's complicated pictorial conceits is aimed at a tender and vulnerable area: the interaction of art and daily experience. With a deadpan but skillful trompe l'oeil the artist incorporates parodies and quotations from art of the past into settings whose banality is made entertainingly absurd by these intrusions.

"New Treasures: A Six Year Retrospective," Indianapolis Museum of Art, October 19 - December 10, 1972. Curator: Richard L. Warrum.
Catalog titled: "Recent Accessions 1966 -1972."   "An American Vermeer, 1970-71 (page 37). Deem has skillfully reconstructed Vermeer's studio on the basis of three separate paintings...(The Love Letter, The Concert, and The Lady Writing a Letter with her Maid). This feat as an art historical tour de force alone makes this work an important document of the development of the history of 20th century painting. There is, however, a more important aspect of this work which must not be overlooked. ...An American Vermeer brings Vermeer and his work and times into a new and richer perspective. And this is a thread which is an integral part of the fabric of George Deem's oeuvre. The use of familiar objects or works of art, revisited and transformed by a contemporary eye and mind helps to clear and bring closer the nature of the original object. In the process, it objectifies new material which the artist himself brings to the work. The result can be a totally new experience in the hands of genius and our new acquisition is a case in point." "May Festival," Robert Graham Gallery, New York, May 1962. Note inconsistency in dating and titling of this exhibition.

I was very proud to go to the Graham Gallery exhibition. It was a group show called "May Festival" and the first real gallery I ever exhibited with. I had shown paintings in the City Center Gallery, there was also the Silvermine credit (Silvermine Guild of Artists, New Canaan, Connecticut, April 26 - May 28, 1964)), I had shown work at the Metropolitan Museum in the employees' cafeteria, but all those things just happened to be. A painting at the Graham Gallery did not just happen to be, it was actually sought out. I was asked to exhibit it by Robert Graham. It was one of my large shelf paintings and I remember there were purple and orange stripes in it. It had a dimension that is strange to me in that it was almost a four foot square. While I made the stretcher I got mixed up in the measurements, for I had planned a six by four foot stretcher, I either ran short of wood or forgot what I had in mind and when I put it together I had to paint something on it, and this was the painting chosen.(excerpt from There's a Cow in Manhattan Part 10).

It was Benny Andrews who I thought was really Benjamin, but he said that he was baptized Benny ... (who) has a way of getting around to galleries and introduced me to Robert Graham, the director of the Graham Gallery on Madison Avenue. Robert said, "Call me Bob," when he visited to see my paintings. He was a tall thin man who looked like the men that worked here on Wall Street, was easy to talk with and able to look at contemporary painting. He liked these paintings that I was doing. The paintings were calligraphic with simple brown and white colors and were all vertical canvases with horizontal lines. I am involved with lined paper, so I painted lined paper, and, with a brush, I write paragraphs on these lines with exciting brush strokes. They are not readable, but have the texture of writing. One, rather large, about fifty inches high, had some bright orange flicked around some unreadable words, as though some teacher had graded a paper of writing. Bob was having a group showing of new painters and decided this painting could be in his gallery show. I call it "Paragraph with Orange." ... Bob Graham's exhibition that was in late June had the first painting that I showed in a gallery. Benny had a painting as well as Dick Miller, an abstract painter whom I knew. ... The exhibit was on the second floor of the Graham Building on Madison Avenue at 71st Street. ... The Graham summer exhibition came down, my painting returned, and Bob's assistant Joan Washburn came here to see more paintings.

"Nuts & Bolts!," Allan Stone Gallery, New York, December 11 - 29, 1962. No catalog. This was George Deem's initial showing with Allan Stone Gallery. The exhibition also was advertised as a two-man exhibition: "Wayne Nowack / George Deem / Allan Stone Gallery / 48 E 86th St., N.Y.C." Works by George Deem: Black Paragraph #1, 1962; Composition (Goya), 1962; Double Landscape, 1962. Artists with work in the exhibition: Steve Antonakis, Barry Bates, Bruce Breeland, George Deem, Irwin Fleminger, Wayne Nowack, Gerd Stern, Helen Stoller. Documentation: George Deem archive at Allan Stone Projects, New York.

My first one-man show was called "Nuts & Bolts." Allan (Stone) arranged the whole thing and although I knew it was happening, and that I was sharing the gallery with a man named Nowack, I was not expecting an announcement in the mail all printed in black and red on white. It was mailed automatically, in that one side had Allan Stone's gallery address with my address printed in that strange registration that Addressographs do, and the other side had large and small printed names of artists in different type and arbitrarily placed all over the card. My name was upside down. It wasn't a two-man show, it was a group show. Group shows never mean anything, just like any group, a group art exhibition is specially uninteresting because no matter what the theme, no artist has ever thought of themes. I saw an exhibition of Vermeer and his contemporaries painting light and everyone who went were looking for the light, which, of course, was used so individually by Vermeer and his contemporaries that the exhibition wasn't about light at all, it wasn't even about Vermeer. "Nuts & Bolts" included some sculpture by a woman who had cast arrangements of huge bolts and nuts. Gerd Stern had some boxes that had lights going off and on in them and Mr. Nowack had boxes and bird cages filled with tiny plastic dolls and Cracker Jack prizes, then painted here and there in very bright colors. It was a poor man's Joseph Cornell. Later in my association with the Allan Stone Gallery, I noticed there was a Joseph Cornell show and I saw no more traces of Nowack. Among the hundred invitations I got to send out myself, most of them had no red registration, so they were just black and white. Naturally, my name was printed in red, so I saw what was happening: the invitations had all been mailed and my name was not on most. In those days this worried me a great deal.
